Hornets Defeat Konkrete Kids

Posted by Emmaus High School Boys Soccer at Aug 31, 2019 1:03PM PDT

The Hornets moved to 2-0-0 with a decisive 4-0 shutout at home versus Northampton on August 31.
The Hornets were unable to capitalize against a tight Northampton defense despite several first half opportunities and went into the second half tied at nil. Junior forward Hudson Peck opened the scoring for Emmaus at the 33’ mark, taking a cross from senior forward Andrew Gaines and driving a one-touch low into the left corner from the top of the box. After that, the floodgates opened. Senior forward Jake Groh cleaned up a rebound of a Hudson Peck shot for a second tally. Peck struck again from another Gaines feed, capitalizing on an opportunity created by a lofted cross from senior defender Thomas Hanvey. Junior midfielder Marco Silva closed the scoring with 4 minutes to play, driving a quick strike to the low left corner after junior midfielder Josh Whalen was brought to the ground but managed to direct the ball toward Silva’s feet.
The Hornet defense recorded their second shutout of the season. Senior defenders Thomas Hanvey, Joe Huck, and Jake Perry, along with sophomore Jaeden Amato kept the Konkrete Kids from providing any true test for the Hornet goalkeepers.

The Hornet JV also recorded a victory, 3-1, over the visiting Northampton JV squad. Trailing 1-0 with 20 minutes to play, the Hornet JV fought back and produced 3 goals to deliver the win. Sophomore forward Brian Flor scored 2 goals for Emmaus and sophomore midfielder Jack Lawrence added another.

The Hornets traveled to Mechanicsburg Friday, August 30 for the season opener against PA Preseason #10 Cumberland Valley High School. On another sweltering day, Emmaus used a late first half goal to edge the Eagles 1-0.
Cumberland Valley looked sharp early, and the first half was an evenly fought contest. Using a series of passes to produce a short shot on the right side, the Eagles’ fans thought that they struck first. However, junior goalkeeper Chris Buck closed off the angle and the shot, to the disappointment of the Eagles fans, only caught the outside of the net. The Hornets reversed the momentum around the 7 minute mark, when junior midfielder Marco Silva delivered an in-stride pass to junior midfielder Patrick Walsh slashing across the defensive backfield. Walsh used a few touches, then delivered a strike to the upper left for the only goal of the contest.
While several opponents fell victim to leg cramps from the heat, the Hornets’ fitness shone as Emmaus dominated the remainder of the game. Emmaus opens its EPC season tomorrow, August 31, against Northampton at home.

The JV Hornets tied Cumberland Valley JV 1-1 in a close match. The Eagles struck first with 7 minutes to play in the game. Refusing to yield, sophomore midfielder Jack Lawrence delivered a low bounding shot that found its way under the keeper with only 2 minutes to play to assure a draw for the Hornets.

The Hornets received top billing in the Morning Call Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Soccer Preview today. The Hornets face their first test Friday, August 30, when they open the season at Cumberland Valley, currently ranked 10th in PA by Top Drawer Soccer.
