Emmaus Shuts Out Freedom To Advance To EPC Semifinal

Posted by Emmaus High School Boys Soccer on Oct 13 2019 at 03:26PM PDT in Fall 2019 Season

The Emmaus Boys Soccer Team posted a convincing 6-0 shutout victory over visiting Freedom in the first round of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playoffs. The Hornets welcomed back seniors Thomas Hanvey and Jake Perry after prolonged absences due to injury, and the two quickly combined for the first two goals of the game. With 23 minutes to play in the half, Hanvey lofted a corner across the goal that Perry redirected to the far post and into goal. Two minutes later, Hanvey sent in another corner and Perry climbed high to drill a header just below the crossbar for a 2-0 lead. With 7 minutes to play in the first half, senior Andrew Gaines got behind the defense and knocked in a goal from close range, his 9th of the season, to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Senior Jake Groh added his team-leading 16th and 17th goals of the season in the 2nd half. Junior Josh Whalen scored the final tally for the Hornets, collecting his 2nd goal in as many games. Junior keepers Chris Buck and Ed Zellner combined for the shutout. The Hornet defense recorded their 10th shutout of the season. Only 3 times this season has an opponent scored more than a single goal, and no opponent has scored more than two. The Hornets advance to the EPC semifinal to meet Parkland, at Nazareth High School, on Tuesday October 15 at 5:30.
