Hornets Overcome Feisty Freedom Squad

Posted by Emmaus High School Boys Soccer on Sep 13 2019 at 05:57PM PDT in Fall 2019 Season

The Emmaus Boys Soccer Team traveled to Freedom on Friday September 13 to earn a 4-1 victory and remain unbeaten. It seemed it would be easy going for the Hornets when junior forward Hudson Peck headed a lofted cross from senior defender Joe Huck into goal less than a minute into the contest. The Patriots, however, had other ideas. The diminutive Freedom squad demonstrated “the beautiful game” with crisp, accurate passing on attack and aggressive pressure on defense. With the aid of a tailwind supporting their attack, Freedom kept the ball on the Emmaus side for much of the first half. With a side change to start the second half, the Hornets took advantage of superior size and strength to assure that, this time, in the end it was the Beast that killed Beauty*. Junior midfielder Pat Walsh headed a corner inside the far post from senior midfielder Eric Johnson’s corner with 22 minutes to play for a 2-0 advantage. Freedom countered a minute later on a penalty kick after a Freedom attacker went to the ground on a corner kick. Junior goalkeeper Chris Buck and his defense were flawless the rest of the way, not allowing another Freedom goal. With just under 6 minutes to play, Emmaus added an insurance goal on a penalty kick by senior forward Jake Groh when Peck was taken down in the box after beating a defender. The Hornets added a 4th goal when junior forward Andrew Gaines passed a ball down the left side beyond the defense for streaking junior forward Marco Silva. Silva made a few touches then fired the ball into the far side of the net with 3 minutes to play to make a final score of 4-1. Junior defender Josh Miller deserves recognition for the countless times he converted dangerous Patriot attacks into controlled Hornet possessions. The Hornets record improved to 8-0-0 overall, 6-0-0 in the EPC.

The Hornet JV dominated the Freedom JV 7-0. Sophomore forward Logan Mains and sophomore midfielder Robbie Machado each had two goals. Sophomore forward Bryan Flor, freshman midfielder Ryan Latchford, and freshman midfielder Teddy Coenen had a goal apiece. The Emmaus JV record improved to 4-2-2 with the win.
